Gone are the days, when people had to ask pedestrians, the route to their destination. Technology has made life much easier for the people, and GPS on a cell phone is poised to be the next big wave in mobility. With mobile phones becoming an integral part of their lives, consumers are looking at more and more functionality in a single device. The main advantage of GPS on mobile device is having mapping, routing and navigation functionality
besides the regular handset features like SMS, camera, e-mail.
According to a report on ciol.com, SatNav Technologies offers GPS turn-by-turn navigation software for windows mobile devices called ‘Satguide’.
"The software upgradation of mobile device will be a cost-effective transformation of a phone into a high-end navigation device. Potential for navigation devices is increasing significantly every year, with over 300,000 Windows-based handheld devices in the country, we are confident that we will be able to tap a significant 25 percent of the market," said Amit Prasad, Founder and CEO, SatNav Technologies.
The market in India
Devinder Kishore, Director—Marketing, Nokia said, "We are focusing on educating the mobile users on the concept of navigation by showcasing live demos at various touch points (shopping malls, Nokia Concept Stores, airports, etc) across the eight cities where GPS is available."
With Nokia 6110 navigator, one can take phone calls while the navigation is on. One can mute the navigation directions audio (shortcut is to press number ‘9’) and take the call. If the navigation is not put on mute, it will continue giving directions in the background when you are on the phone. Only the user can hear the directions. The person on the other side will only hear the users’ voice and not the navigation instructions.
Edward Wang, Business Head—Mobile Communication Business, Asus added, "Navigation is still a new concept for India since the infrastructure process for navigation is still shaping up. As long as the infrastructure is getting better and the address system is getting more accurate in India, navigation technology is sure to boom very fast. Big countries demand more navigation devices than small countries, so India definitely will be the next new market for GPS."
